J.Crew like many retailers have faced a harsh financial year with sales declining by thirteen percent last quarter. CEO Mickey Drexler has been forced to rethink their strategy and create a new one. But instead of starting new he has instead decided to go back to the basics. J.Crew is known for its cashmere sweaters, blazers and wide range of work trousers which is what works for them. The past few years they have tried to move away from their classics and brand themselves as being trendy with jumpsuits and statement pieces. Now venturing out and creating designs that are out of the norm is normally healthy for a company and in many cases the only way for a fashion brand to survive. But in J.Crew's case they pushed themselves so far outside of the box that they neglected the classics that got them where they are in the first place. We think refocusing their efforts into these pieces while not completely abandoning their trendier side is what is needed to regain sales. Essentially they are flip flopping their current strategy and designing more of what people expect from J.Crew while sprinkling in some trendy pieces to please all demos. We think it is refreshing for a company to recognize their flaws and to work on fixing them and are excited to see where J.Crew goes in the future. In the mean time take a look at some of our favorite pieces from the J.Crew fall collection in stores now.
